Sky Lantern Ceremony & Old Town of Jiufen

Discover the Traditions and Charms of Taiwan’s Mining Country Experience a sky lantern ceremony and the Old Town of Jiufen during a visit to Taiwan’s mining country. Embark on an hour-long drive with your guide to Shihfen, an important coal mining town in the early 20th century and home to an annual lantern festival. Sky lanterns—small hot-air balloons made out of paper—trace their history back to the 3rd century BC. Enjoy an opportunity to participate in this unique event, during which people write their wishes, dreams and prayers on the lanterns before releasing them into the sky. After, head to the village of Jiufen, a former gold-mining center. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then set out to explore the winding streets and narrow alleys of the old town. Stroll past shops selling local delicacies and handicrafts, or perhaps pause for tea at one of the many teahouses before boarding your motor coach and returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
