Shimabara & Mt. Unzen
Mountainous Hot Springs and Historic Old Town Immerse yourself in breathtaking scenery and visit Shimabara’s historic Old Town. Begin with a scenic drive by motor coach past the Ariake Sea bay and Shimabara Peninsula. After approximately two hours, you will arrive at Shimabara Castle, which was built during the 17th century and later destroyed during the Shimabara Rebellion. After time to explore its restored interior, continue to the Old Town of Shimabara to view its carp streams and traditional teahouses. Walk in the footsteps of the samurai in Teppo-machi (Gun Town). Stroll along the well-preserved canals that flow along the streets, then enjoy lunch before heading to Jigoku and Mt. Unzen, home to several hot springs—called jigoku , or “hells and vents.” You will have an opportunity to explore independently and see the steam rising up from the ground before beginning the journey back to your ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
