Medieval Town & Abbey in the Wine Country

Languedoc Province Landscape and Heritage Experience the medieval heritage of Languedoc during visits to the charming town of Pézenas and Valmagne Abbey. Begin with a drive by motor coach to Pézenas. Built on a vineyard-covered plain, it was the residence of the governors of the Languedoc province between the 16th and 18th centuries. Set out on foot to explore its old town, passing by mansions with elegant balconies, ornate doorways and narrow streets unchanged since the 17th century—the workshops of craftsmen and artists now occupy these historic buildings. Return to your coach and continue to the rose-colored Valmagne Abbey. Rising serenely above the surrounding vineyards, it was founded in the 12th century and was once one of the wealthiest abbeys in southern France, housing up to 3,200 Benedictine monks. See its Gothic-style church, cloisters with Tuscany gardens, chapter house and refectory before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
