Highlights of Klawock
River Walk, Carving Workshop and the Klawock Totem Park Embark on a journey through the cultural landmarks of Klawock, one of the northwest coast’s earliest settlements. Your excursion begins at the Klawock River Trail, where you will set out on a guided walk through temperate rainforest. Stroll along a waterway famed for year-round fishing and see the community’s original village site. Next, continue to the Klawock Heenya Carving Shed, a workshop where master artisans and their apprentices practice the art of totem pole carving, turning cedar into new poles and maintaining older works. Here, you will discover the intricate processes involved in this art form, learn how designs are laid out, cut and finished before continuing to Klawock Totem Park. At this hillside gallery descending toward the sea, you will view authentic totem poles representing Tlingit clans from across Southeast Alaska. After, return to your ship. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
