Rainforest Sanctuary & Totem Park

Forest Trek and Indigenous Traditions Lace up your boots for a walk in a mountain rainforest and tour a historic sawmill that makes traditional totems. Venture into Tongass National Forest during a scenic drive to Herring Cove, an estuary known for its wildlife. Meet your guide at the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary, where you will set off on moss-lined paths through tall stands of spruce, hemlock and cedar trees in lush temperate rainforest. Stop at several viewpoints along a boardwalk to watch for birds and local fauna as you pause to take photos. Further along the trail, find the Herring Bay Lumber Company, where you will view a historic sawmill and learn about the lumber industry that fueled the area’s economy for decades. The region is also known for its totems carved by members of the Tsimshian Indigenous People. Hear about their culture and see several carved poles by a master artist before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
