John Hunter Memorial Trail Hike

Journey Through Towering Spruce Trees Embark on a guided trek through the forest where you can take in panoramic views of Valdez’s natural landscapes. A short drive from the port takes you to the John Hunter Memorial Trail, named in honor of a local outdoorsman who played a key role in advocating for trail safety standards in the local community. Flanked by coastal spruce forest, the path begins near the Richardson Highway and gradually ascends upward through the trees. Set out along the trail with your guide, who will share insights about the region during your journey. As you climb, the route opens to sweeping views of Valdez, the port and the surrounding Chugach Mountains, as well as the Trans-Alaska Pipeline—this feat of modern engineering winds its way through the valley below, an enduring symbol of Alaskan innovation. After taking in the views, make your descent and return to your awaiting ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
