Chilkat Valley Scenic Drive
Dramatic Landscapes and Alaskan Wildlife Discover the striking beauty of the Chilkat Valley during a panoramic drive to where the Chilkat and Chilkoot meet. Set out on a short drive to the historic Ft. Seward, to the Pyramid Island Lookout. This expansive delta is where the Chilkat River deposits large amounts of glacial silt into the ocean each day. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife as you continue to the Letnikof Cove Cannery Lookout, where the Rainbow Glacier and Chilkat Mountains contrast the red buildings of this historic salmon cannery. Continue to the mouth of the Chilkoot River for picturesque views over the ocean, surrounding mountains and forest; bald eagles are frequently spotted here, soaring above the spruce trees. At the end of your excursion, you will receive a signed copy of Where Eagles Gather , written by Joe Ordonez, a local Haines author, photographer and expert on the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve. Please note: wildlife sightings are not guaranteed. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
