Wrangell’s Totem Heritage

Discover Tlingit Craftsmanship Journey through Wrangell to learn about Tlingit history and the cultural significance of totem pole carving. Board your motor coach and drive through downtown Wrangell en route to Chief Shakes Tribal House, a replica of a traditional Tinglit clan house set on a small island off the waterfront. Step inside with your guide to explore while learning about the clan’s history—during your visit, you will gain insight into the significance of house posts, carved screens, enduring cultural ceremonies and more. Next, continue to Totem Park, where historic and replica poles stand in the heart of modern downtown Wrangell. Learn about how these poles mark events, honor leaders and preserve stories. Cap your day at the Carving Shed, where you will see tools and patterns used by contemporary Tlingit totem pole artists before beginning the journey back to your awaiting ship. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
