Plant Life of the Alaska Panhandle

Informative Trail Hike Through Temperate Rainforest Hike a trail outside of Wrangell to learn about the indigenous plant life of southeastern Alaska. The temperate rainforest of the Alaska Panhandle is home to a diverse and eclectic variety of plant life. Join your knowledgeable naturalist, who will lead you on a leisurely and informative walk around a 1½-mile loop through both forest and bog meadows. Set out for a short walk through Wrangell, where you will get a feel for local life as you pass the town’s churches, schools and homes. Once on the packed gravel trail, you will quickly notice the different species of plants that inhabit the surrounding temperate rainforest. Enjoy opportunities to bird-watch and take photographs while learning about Alaska’s natural history, edible and medicinal plant uses, and the special ecology of the muskeg (peat bog)—an important component of the temperate rainforest. At the end of your walk, you will return to your awaiting ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
