Ancient Shores of Nora
Take a Pilgrimage to Nora’s Historic Sites Explore a fascinating city from Sardinia’s ancient past during this visit to a revered archaeological site. As you get underway with your guide, you will stop for photos at Monte Urpino, a city park atop a low forested hill with lovely views. Our coastal route follows the path of pilgrims who annually retrace the steps of St. Efisio, patron saint of Cagliari. As you pass St. Gilla’s lagoon, you might see pink flamingos in its salt-rich waters. At the archaeological site of Nora, wander among Carthaginian and Roman ruins. Nora’s two harbors, each sheltered from differing wind directions, allowed uninterrupted trade in varying weather. You will view the old port’s warehouses, Roman baths and a well-preserved theater. While the sea has reclaimed much of the site, buildings are visible just below the surface of the clear waters. You will also see the quaint church of St. Efisio, built where Efisio was martyred. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
