Welsh Heritage of Dolavon & Gaiman
History and Culture of Patagonia’s “New Wales” Immerse yourself in the history and customs of the Puerto Madryn region’s Welsh settlers. In 1865, a group of more than 150 Welsh settlers in search of better economic prospects and religious freedom set sail from Liverpool for southern Patagonia on board the Mimosa . They landed in present-day Puerto Madryn, and shortly thereafter founded the towns of Gaiman and Dolavon. Take a scenic inland drive to Dolavon and visit a flour mill, then continue to a farm that grows berries in the middle of the Patagonian desert. It was of great concern for these Welsh pioneers to retain their heritage while establishing a “New Wales” in South America. Experience their efforts during a visit to Gaiman, where the Welsh language is still spoken. Enjoy lunch at Na Petko restaurant, then take a guided tour of the town chapel and a typical Welsh museum before returning to your ship. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines.
