Volcanic Landscapes by ATV

Intriguing Tales and Sweeping Views of Eldfell Explore the desolate beauty of Heimaey’s volcanic terrain and learn about its history during an ATV ride. Heimaey’s history has been influenced by the Eldfell volcano, which last erupted in 1973 releasing lava flows that threatened to destroy the village and reshaped the landscape. Meet your knowledgeable guide, receive your gear and a safety briefing, then set out on your two-person ATV across the volcanic bedrock. Your guide will pause along the way to regale you with stories of that eventful night. At Prestvík Beach, see the rusting remains of the fishing trawler Pelagus; hear the harrowing story of Guðlaugur Friðþórsson, who swam more than 3.5 miles to shore in dark freezing waters after his ship sank. Marvel at the stunning views and the brutal power of nature around Eldfell, then return to Heimaey. Please note: ATV drivers must possess a valid driver’s license.
