Duke Mansion at Rough Point
Visit a Museum at a Grand Gilded Age Estate Explore the exquisite art collection and elegant furnishings of the opulent Rough Point mansion. A short drive brings you to this English manor–style estate-turned-museum, located along affluent Bellevue Avenue and perched on a windswept promontory overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Originally built for railroad scion Frederick W. Vanderbilt, the mansion was purchased by tobacco tycoon James Duke and inherited by his daughter, socialite and philanthropist Doris Duke. A knowledgeable art collector, Duke filled the mansion’s 49 rooms with masterpieces by Renoir, van Dyck and Joshua Reynolds, as well as artisans from the Ming Dynasty. Enjoy a self-guided tour of the grounds and several of the mansion’s rooms, where you will see exhibits of clothing, jewelry, art, priceless antiques and furnishings that Duke collected throughout her life. After, you will return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
