Rural East Iceland
Glacier, Lagoon and Icelandic Horses Explore Iceland’s rural eastern coast and the region surrounding the Vatnajökull glacier. Set out on a scenic drive to the town of Höfn, a quaint town popular with visitors as a gateway to one of Iceland’s national parks and Vatnajökull—one of Europe’s largest glaciers. Continue your journey through the mountainous terrain to the Hoffellsjökull glacier, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull. It is known for its majestic natural beauty with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, valleys and rivers. Like many glaciers around the world, it has retreated, leaving a lagoon and a thriving eco-system with rare Icelandic plants that attract a variety of bird species. After, enjoy a light lunch at a local restaurant before heading to a local horse range where you will enjoy a fascinating show. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
