Baroque Catania

Panoramic Drive and Walk Past City Landmarks Delve into the history of Catania during a panoramic excursion to see its main sights. Embark on a scenic drive by motor coach, passing landmarks such as the Fontana di Proserpina (“Proserpine’s Fountain”), Viale Vittorio Veneto, Via Etnea and the Piazza Stesicoro, a historic square dominated by the Monument to Vincenzo Bellini and the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheater. Follow your guide on foot for a stroll past the baroque cathedral dedicated to St. Agatha, Piazza Duomo and the Fontana dell’Elefante, which was built by using ancient decorative elements, including lava from Mt. Etna. Continue on through the Via Crociferi, home to numerous religious buildings. Admire the striking baroque architecture that the city is known for, before returning to Piazza Stesicoro for a closer look at the monument to Italian Romantic composer and Catania native Bellini. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
