Highlights of Syracuse
Archaeological Park of Neapolis and Island of Ortigia Travel back in time as you discover the iconic sights of the legendary city of Syracuse. Founded by the Greeks in 734 BC, Syracuse would become an influential political and military power in the Mediterranean by the 5th century. Today, it is one of the few cities in the world to hold the distinction of having two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, an expansive area in the heart of modern Syracuse; its 86 acres preserves the most important ancient monuments of the district. Highlights include the Latomia del Paradiso, or “Paradise Quarry,” and the famous Orecchio di Dionisio, or “Ear of Dionysius.” Later, head to the island of Ortigia, the oldest inhabited part of the city. Admire the Fonte Arethusa and stroll through the narrow streets, passing landmarks such as the baroque cathedral, originally a Greek temple. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
