Scenic Countryside & Aigues-Mortes
The Mediterranean Port City of Louis IX Explore the striking medieval town of Aigues-Mortes during an excursion to the scenic Camargue plains. In the 13th century, King Louis IX of France wanted a Mediterranean port to serve as an embarkation point for the Crusades. He obtained Aigues-Mortes and initiated the construction of the towers and defensive fortifications that are still visible today. After a drive through the bucolic landscape of southern France, explore this historical jewel on foot. See Tour de Constance, set on the Camargue plains, a natural reserve featuring picturesque saltwater lagoons, marshes and farmland. This large defensive tower was originally constructed during the 13th century and was later transformed into a prison during France’s religious wars of the late-16th century. You will have free time to stroll through the narrow streets at your leisure before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
