Birds of Uruguay

Wetland Reserves: Home to a Diverse Avian Population Grab your guidebook and binoculars as you head into the wetlands around Montevideo in search of local birdlife. Meet your naturalist guide and drive to the reserves on the western edge of the city. Along the way, your birding specialist will offer insight into the richness and diversity of the local avian population that inhabits these ecologically important environments. Your journey will take you to protected areas such as Santiago Vázquez—located at the mouth of the Santa Lucía River—and the coastal marshes and lagoons of Pasqual and Penino beaches. You will visit several bird-watching viewpoints at each destination. Keep your eyes peeled and listen for species such as ibis, gilded sapphires, green kingfishers, green-barred woodpeckers, and freckle-breasted thornbirds. Replenish your energy in the field by nibbling on a selection of tasty Uruguayan pastries. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
