A Stroll Through Recife Antigo

Colonial History of Old Recife Discover the colonial influences on Brazilian culture through the architecture and artistry of old Recife. As you explore, you will pass historic and artistic patrimonies, and witness beautifully restored buildings. One of the most famous is the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue, on Rua do Bom Jesus. It was the first synagogue built in the Americas. As you wander deeper into Old Recife, marvel at the distinct Dutch and Portuguese houses from the 16th century. View the Torre Malakoff Cultural Observatory, built between 1835 and 1855. This Tunisian-style monument reveals one of the most beautiful views of the city. See the restored pink Apollo Theater, which opened in 1846 and closed for more than a century before being renovated into the modern complex that exists today. From the banks of the Capibaribe River in the colorful Marco Zero Square, enjoy a final view of this glorious city. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
