Traditional Sami Camp
Honningsvåg, Norway

Traditional Sami Camp

Discover Indigenous Culture Gain insight into the rich culture and traditions of the Sami people and meet gentle reindeer up close. Begin your journey with a drive by motor coach through rugged Magerøya en route to a traditional Sami camp. On arrival, you will be greeted by your hosts and invited to step inside a lavvo , a conical tent-like structure used as a portable dwelling during seasonal migrations. Gather around a fire to hear stories of reindeer herding and Sami history and learn about how modern Sami communities work to preserve their language and customs. Listen to the haunting tones of joiking , a traditional form of song, and try your hand at throwing a lasso, a tool still used by reindeer herders today. Step outside for an opportunity to meet some of the reindeer before sampling a selection of snacks that highlight local flavors. After, return to your coach for the journey back to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
