Home Visit & Sights of Sommarøy

Knitting Basics, Museum Visit and Coffee with Locals Learn more about life above the Arctic Circle while interacting with the residents of Sommarøy. Depart your ship and head out to the neighboring islands. Travel through a pastoral landscape dotted with traditional farms in valleys bordered by steep gray mountains rising out of the deep ocean. Arrive at the rustic idyll of Sommarøy, an island village of 300 residents that generations of fishermen and hunters have called home. Visit the huseflid, or “craftsmanship building,” and learn the basics of knitting with local grandmothers over waffles and coffee. Then tour the local museum and its exhibits showcasing northern life during the 19th century. Afterward, receive a warm welcome into the home of a resident, who will share stories with you over coffee and lefse. Then head to a scenic lookout to admire the view over the town before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
