Northern Norway During World War II
Museum Tells the Story of German Occupation and the Tirpitz Battleship Discover how World War II affected Alta during a visit to the Tirpitz Museum. During the war, the Altafjord was the Nazis’ largest naval base outside of Germany. Occupied by thousands of soldiers, Alta was destroyed near the end of the war as the Germans instituted a scorched-earth policy in the wake of their retreat. Take a drive to Kåfjord, located a short distance outside of Alta. Here, you will visit a red wooden church and the museum named after the German battleship that was anchored here. Browse an array of photographs and artifacts that tell the story of Norway’s struggle against the Germans and take time to watch a film about the Tirpitz . Afterward, you will drive to several relevant sites from the war, including a viewpoint that shows where the Tirpitz hid and was attacked by British bombers and submarines, before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
