Arita & Imari Pottery

The History of Porcelain and Ceramics in Japan Learn about the rich history of pottery in the Kyushu region during visits to the towns of Arita and Imari. Drive to the Kyushu Ceramic Museum in Arita, renowned for its famous Arita-yaki pottery. The museum displays many historic, artistic and industrial items related to Japanese ceramics in an effort to preserve and advance Japanese ceramic arts culture. Spend time examining its collection before heading to China on the Park to learn more about the history of Fukagawa Porcelain—a ceramics company with roots back to the 17th century—and the feudal lords of Nabeshima. You will have free time to explore and browse the many ceramic wares on display. After lunch, travel to Imari to visit Okawachiyama, a small, isolated village that was the first to produce porcelain in Japan. Stroll along its narrow lanes, past pottery workshops and tall chimneys, before returning to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
