Best of Kyoto

Nijō Castle and the Golden Pavilion Immerse yourself in history on a journey to Kyoto’s most significant sights. Visit Nijō Castle, built during the 17th century by Ieyasu—founder of the Tokugawa shogunate. Its Ninomaru Palace was declared one of Japan’s national treasures; the palace’s creaking floors, or “bush warbler boards,” are an integral design attribute, warning occupants against intruders. Take a stroll within its fortified walls and learn about its striking design features. After lunch at a local restaurant, journey to the Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion). Admire its elaborate 14th-century decor, and witness its opulent gold leaf–plated facade and bronze phoenix towering above. Initially built as a residence for shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was later converted to a Buddhist temple. Enjoy a walk around its rock-studded lake before reboarding your motor coach for the return journey to your awaiting ship. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities. Activities by foot may contain difficult, unpaved surfaces and/or multiple stairs and steep inclines. Tot
