Battleship Island
Coal-Mining History and Visit to an Abandoned Island Discover the fascinating history of Hashima Island during a visit to this now uninhabited site. Nicknamed Gunkanjima, or “Battleship Island,” because of its distinctive profile, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a symbol of the rapid industrialization that took place in Japan starting in the late 19th century. Known for its undersea coal mines, the island was the site of Japan’s first large reinforced concrete building, built to house mine workers and their families. At one time, before its closure and abandonment in 1974, this 16-acre island had the highest population density in the world. Travel there by ferry to see what remains of the towering concrete structures. Nature has reclaimed much of the island, but many of the buildings still stand; its eerie atmosphere has been used as a set piece in several films, including Skyfall. Afterward, you will return to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
