Historic Morpeth & Maitland Jail

Visit a Well-Preserved Colonial-Era Town and Prison Uncover the history of Australia’s Northern Territory during guided tours of Morpeth and Maitland Jail. Head inland to Morpeth, located along the banks of the scenic Hunter River. Walk through its narrow streets lined with sandstone gutters, over stone footpaths and past colonial-era buildings while learning about the town’s importance as a 19th-century river port. Enjoy free time to browse Morpeth’s wide range of boutique art galleries, or sip a coffee in a charming café. Later, head to nearby Maitland for a visit to its infamous jail. Opened in 1848, the jail was Australia’s longest-running prison upon its closure in 1998. Hear stories of the inmates who once inhabited its cells, and learn about the prison’s evolution from the English Pentonville style of the original cell blocks to the modern maximum security wings built in 1993. Then, you will transfer back to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
