Homer Harbor on Foot

Delve into the Heart of Homer’s Maritime Life Uncover the rich history of Homer Harbor and learn about its significance during a guided walk of the waterfront. Set out along the Homer Spit to learn about this working harbor, one of the largest in Alaska—home to more than 900 permanent stalls and a mile of transient moorage, this deep-water port was originally developed to support Homer’s coal and fishing industries. Learn how this bustling port has shaped the economy over the years, playing host to commercial fishing fleets, charter boats and private vessels. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of local wildlife during your walk, including sea otters floating among the boats, harbor seals near the docks and bald eagles soaring overhead. Interpretive stops along your route offer further insight into the harbor’s geography, its impact on human history and the evolving role that tourism plays in daily life on the Homer Spit. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
