Timeless Traditions of Kyoto
Temple, Meditation and Tea Ceremony Visit the Golden Pavilion, and experience Kyoto’s traditions as you gain a sense of bygone days. Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, is one of Japan’s must-see temples and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Admire its elaborate 14th-century decor and witness its opulent gold leaf-plated facade and the bronze phoenix adornment above it. Enjoy a Japanese-style lunch accompanied by a maiko performance. Then visit the sublime Ryozen Kannon, a somber temple topped with an 80-foot statue of the Goddess of Mercy commemorating those who died in World War II’s Pacific Theater. Later, you will have an opportunity to experience both Zazen, a form of Japanese meditation, and a traditional tea ceremony. Also known as the “Way of Tea,” this ceremony is a cultural activity involving the preparation and presentation of matcha-a powdered green tea. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
