Nagasaki, Japan

The Atomic Bomb Museum & Peace Park

A Tranquil Plea for Eternal Peace Learn about one of the most pivotal moments in world history and its human cost to the people of Nagasaki. Today, this city of renewal and hope is a rare blend of East and West. But before August 9, 1945, the day an atomic bomb was dropped on the very site occupied by the Atomic Bomb Museum, it was a traditional Japanese city. Drive with your guide to this hallowed memorial to peace and optimism. Its insightful exhibits chronicle the cityscape and its people before, during and after the bombing. Listen to a heartbreaking account from a survivor of that fateful day. You will see a clock that stopped precisely at 11:02, the time of the detonation; some of the victims’ belongings; and leaflets dropped by American forces warning of the bomb. You will also visit the Nagasaki Peace Park, pausing to contemplate the power of the Peace Statue and the Fountain of Peace. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
