Green Hill Fort
Thursday Island, Australia

Green Hill Fort

Discover 19th-Century Defenses and Uncover the Island’s History Explore Green Hill Fort and learn about the important role it played in Australia’s defense on this informative tour. Built between 1891 and 1893, it was originally constructed to defend against a possible Russian invasion. In 1927, the fort was decommissioned and the buildings demolished; however, it was later reactivated during World War II as a signal and wireless station. Take a stroll through the restored underground rooms and tunnels, which now house a well-curated display of military history. Discover the island’s pearling past and its residents’ interesting stores as your guide brings to life the history of Thursday Island. Take in the stunning views from the elevated lookout before making your way back to your ship. En route, stop at Thursday Island Cemetery—the final resting place of many entrepreneurs, pearl divers and fortune hunters from faraway shores. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
