Cockatoo Island
Visit a Historic Former Penal Colony and Shipyard Open a little-known chapter in Australia’s history book at Cockatoo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This largest of Sydney Harbour’s islands was originally a penal colony for convicts who re-offended in the colonies. It also became one of Australia’s biggest shipyards, built by those same convicts. After a ferry ride, follow your guide to the Visitor Center, where an audio headset will narrate the sights as you discover for yourself the island’s interesting features. See the Fitzroy Dock, sandstone jail, tunnels and silos where convicts lived and worked, and learn about the conditions they endured. You can also venture further afield on the convict or maritime trail. Today, Cockatoo Island is a versatile cultural venue that hosts art installations, music festivals and more. Wander freely, relax at the Societé Overboard café and take in picturesque views as you ponder the past. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
