The Otago Peninsula

Discover New Zealand’s Unique Flora and Fauna Explore the Otago Peninsula and its diverse wildlife, and see the world’s smallest penguin up close. Embark on a scenic drive to the Otago Peninsula, a natural haven for wildlife, including albatross, penguins, seals and more. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of wading birds, including royal spoonbills, as you explore tidal inlets and learn about how New Zealand’s long geological isolation shaped the evolution of its distinct flora and fauna. Then, head to the Takiharuru nature reserve, where you will watch for sightings of albatross soaring above and fur seals playing in the water. The reserve is protected by local Māori and home to over 300 breeding pairs of blue penguins, the peninsula’s largest colony. Learn about the world’s smallest penguins and cap your excursion with a sunset viewing of these animals returning to the reserve after a day at sea. Please note: wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
