The Moeraki Boulders
Experience a 60-Million-Year-Old Geological Marvel Travel to Koekohe Beach on Otago's coast to marvel at the giant Moeraki Boulders, a natural and mythic phenomenon. The Moeraki Boulders consist of more than 50 spherical boulders that lie on the beach like huge marbles that have been casually left there by giants. Each one weighs several tons and measures up to 12 feet in circumference. Formed in the ancient sea floor sediment, they are estimated to be 60 million years old. In Māori legend, these spheres are said to be the food baskets washed ashore after the legendary Āraiteuru canoe, which brought the ancestral Māori to the South Island, was wrecked at Shag Point. Moving from the beach to the Moeraki village, enliven your taste buds with a selection of regional specialities. Your appetite satiated, you will return to your ship in Dunedin and enjoy an overview of the city’s sights en route. * Demanding - Physically challenging activities, including extensive walks, hiking, riding, water sports, and high altitude activities.
