Robben Island
Cape Town, South Africa

Robben Island

South Africa’s Notorious Prison Island Gain insight into the history of the infamous Robben Island and its most famous political prisoner, Nelson Mandela. For more than four centuries, the island was a place of punishment for exiles and convicts. During the 1960s, it became synonymous with the struggle against apartheid in South Africa, confining political prisoners such as Mandela and poet Dennis Brutus. You will board a ferry and transfer to the island, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival, enjoy an orientation drive, bypassing the old leper colony, a Muslim shrine and a shipwreck. Learn about the 23 mammals and 132 bird species here, including the African penguin, and visit the lime quarry where Mandela’s eyes were permanently damaged while enduring back-breaking labor. Then, join a guided tour of the former prison’s maximum-security block, including Mandela’s cell, before returning to the mainland and your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
