Bay of Islands (Waitangi), New Zealand

Waitangi Treaty Grounds

Experience a Māori Welcome at New Zealand’s Most Sacred Site Discover the island’s rich history with a tour of the Waitangi Treaty Grounds and get a glimpse of Māori culture. Begin your tour at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, one of the most sacred sites in New Zealand, or “Aotearoa” in Te reo Māori . This is the site where the Māori and Great Britain signed the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. With your guide, walk this historic location and discover the impact that this treaty had. Explore the Treaty House and view an imposing waka taua or "war canoe". Next, take part in a powhiri or "welcome" at the Te Whare Runagna, an intricately carved meeting house. Witness a cultural performance that includes songs and a traditional haka or "war dance." Enjoy a light refreshment before concluding your tour. You will have the option to return to your ship by foot or motor coach, or to stay and visit the site on your own, where you can explore its museum. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
