Orkney Islands (Kirkwall), Scotland

Barony Mill & Kirbuster Farm Museum

From the Mill to the Farmhouse Uncover Orkney’s rich heritage during visits to a 19th-century watermill and Kirbuster Farm Museum. Accompanied by your guide, travel through the rolling countryside to reach Barony Mill—established in 1873, it is still in operation today. Here, you will learn about the ancient methods used at the mill to grind bere, an ancient form of barley which thrives in cool temperatures. Step inside the mill’s shop and browse the selection of locally made biscuits, bannocks and oatcakes before continuing to Kirbuster Farm Museum, housed within Europe’s last surviving example of a traditional “Firehoose.” Inside, glimpse the central hearth with its peat fire and a Neolithic stone neuk bed. Take a stroll through the gardens and try your hand at putting on the green before returning to your ship, passing by the iconic Ring of Brodgar and the Standing Stones of Stenness along the way. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
