Orkney’s Wartime Legacy

The Island's Role in the World Wars Uncover the wartime history of Orkney, starting with the Churchill Barriers, built to protect Scapa Flow. Visit the beautiful Italian Chapel, built by Italian prisoners of war interned on the island during the conflict. Continue south, stopping at a scenic viewpoint to see the old block ships sunk in the water to defend Scapa Flow before the barriers were built. Next, enjoy a panoramic drive along the north coast, hearing wartime stories from your guide before arriving at Ness Battery in Stromness. The highlight of the tour is the World War II Ness Battery, which played a crucial role in the defense of Scapa Flow in both world wars. This site is unique in Britain in that it has not only the original gun emplacements, but also the wooden accommodation huts, one of which has a painted mural depicting an English village. Take time to explore before heading back to your ship. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines. Total time walking or standing normally ranges from 1.5 to 3 hours.
