History of Maputo
Key Landmarks and Mozambique’s Journey to Independence Explore some of Maputo’s most interesting sites on a panoramic drive through downtown. Set out for the heart of Maputo to gain a deeper understanding of the city’s history as you pass by several important landmarks and hear about the thirty-year war that destroyed much of its infrastructure and historic architecture. Stop at Independence Square, where a statue of the country’s first president, Samora Machel, towers from the center of the plaza. A focal point of the city, the square is surrounded by some of its most attractive and notable buildings like the neoclassical City Hall, the narrow, soaring Maputo Cathedral made of concrete and cement, and the historic Iron House constructed of cast iron and sheet metal. You will also see public botanic garden, Tunduru Gardens, designed in 1885 before you make your way to a local venue for refreshments. * Easy - Walking portions are generally over easy surfaces with few steps or inclines. Total time walking or standing is normally not longer than 1.5 hours.
