You will travel with your guide up the coast to this medieval picture-postcard town, entering through its 14th-century crenellated walls. Learn its fascinating history from your guide during a half-mile walk, then you will have time to meander its cobblestone streets, savoring an ambience of gleaming white buildings, balconies overflowing with bougainvillea and decorative tiles. The ever-present 14th-century castle was rebuilt after the defeat of the Moors in 1148. At the Church of Santa Maria, admire vibrant ceiling frescoes, elaborate hand-painted tiles and stately Renaissance columns. In 1441, ten-year-old Afonso V famously married his cousin, eight-year-old Isabel, here. Explore the town’s Pillory Square or pause to sample authentic Portuguese cuisine at a local eatery. * Moderate - Walking portions may be long and somewhat challenging with occasional step-ups, stairs and inclines.
